Walk-In Interview Tips: Documents Checklist, Dress Code & Questions

Going to a walk-in interview? Use this complete documents checklist, dress code guide, likely questions and how to spot fake drives so you get selected fast.

Walk-In Interview Tips: Documents Checklist, Dress Code & Questions

A walk-in interview is one of the quickest ways to get hired in India. There is no waiting for a call-back: you show up at the venue, go through two or three rounds, and many candidates leave with a result the same day. That speed is also the catch. You get one chance, often in a crowded room, and small mistakes such as a missing photocopy or arriving at noon can cost you the job before anyone has heard you speak.

This guide covers how walk-in drives work in 2026, the complete documents checklist, what to wear, the questions you are most likely to face, and how to check that a walk-in is genuine.

How a Typical Walk-In Drive Works

Walk-ins are common for BPO and customer support, sales, retail, banking and loan sales, hospitality, warehouse and back-office roles, where employers need to fill many seats quickly. The flow usually looks like this:

  1. Registration: you fill a form at the front desk and get a token number.
  2. Screening or HR round: a short conversation to check communication, location, salary expectation and availability.
  3. Assessment: depending on the role, a typing test, an aptitude or English test, a spoken English voice test, or a role-play.
  4. Operations or manager round: the team lead checks whether you can do the actual work.
  5. Final HR discussion: salary, joining date and documents.

Each round can eliminate candidates, so treat the screening conversation as seriously as the final round.

Before You Leave Home

  • Read the job post again. Note the role, shift timings, location and required experience. If it says "graduates only" or "immediate joiners", be honest about whether you qualify.
  • Check the venue and timing. Most drives specify a window like 10 AM to 2 PM. Aim to arrive in the first hour, when interviewers are fresh and seats are still open.
  • Plan the route and keep extra time for traffic or finding the right floor.
  • Charge your phone and keep a power bank. You may need it to show DigiLocker documents or fill an online form.
  • Eat something. Drives can take four to six hours on busy days.

Walk-In Interview Documents Checklist

Carry everything in a clear plastic folder, originals in one section and photocopies in another. Take at least two sets of photocopies.

Identity and address

  • ☐ Aadhaar card (consider carrying a masked Aadhaar, which hides the first eight digits; you can download it from UIDAI)
  • ☐ PAN card
  • ☐ One more photo ID if available: voter ID, driving licence or passport

Education

  • ☐ 10th and 12th mark sheets and certificates
  • ☐ Graduation or diploma mark sheets and degree or provisional certificate
  • ☐ ITI, typing or computer course certificates if relevant to the role

Experience (if you have worked before)

  • ☐ Offer letter and appointment letter from your last job
  • ☐ Experience or relieving letter
  • ☐ Last three months' salary slips or bank statement showing salary credit
  • ☐ UAN number for PF transfer

Other essentials

  • ☐ Three to five printed copies of your updated resume
  • ☐ Four to six recent passport-size photographs
  • ☐ A cancelled cheque or bank passbook copy (some employers collect bank details at joining)
  • ☐ A pen, because the front desk never has enough

Keep digital copies too. Mark sheets from many boards and universities, along with your Aadhaar and PAN, can be stored in DigiLocker, and documents issued there are widely accepted as valid. Never hand over original certificates for the employer to keep; showing originals for verification and taking them back is normal, keeping them is not.

What to Wear

  • Office, BPO, banking and sales roles: a pressed formal shirt, formal trousers and clean shoes for men; a formal kurta set, salwar suit or shirt and trousers for women.
  • Warehouse, delivery or technical roles: neat, clean casual clothes and closed shoes are fine, but avoid slogans and torn jeans.
  • Keep grooming simple and avoid strong perfume in a crowded waiting hall.

Questions You Will Probably Be Asked

"Tell me about yourself."

Keep it to about one minute: your name, education, any relevant experience or internship, one or two skills that fit this role, and why you came for this drive.

"Why do you want this job?"

Connect your answer to the role, not just the salary: "I enjoy talking to people and I want to build a career in customer service. This process offers training and a fixed shift, which suits me."

"Are you comfortable with rotational or night shifts?"

Answer honestly. Saying yes and then refusing after joining damages your reputation with recruiters.

"What salary do you expect?"

Give a realistic range based on similar openings, and mention that you are flexible for the right role.

"When can you join?"

Walk-in employers often prefer immediate joiners. If you need time, give a specific date.

Small Things That Make a Big Difference

  • Be polite with the security guard and front-desk staff. Recruiters sometimes ask them how candidates behaved.
  • Keep your phone on silent and avoid long calls in the waiting area.
  • If you are rejected in one round, ask briefly what you could improve. Many recruiters will tell you, and the same company may run another drive next month.
  • Before leaving, note the name and number of the HR person who interviewed you.

How to Spot a Fake Walk-In

  • The company asks for a fee for registration, training, uniform or "file charges".
  • The venue is a hotel room or residence instead of an office, with no company branding.
  • The job promises a very high salary for no experience and no skills.
  • You are offered the job without any interview at all.

You can cross-check job fairs and openings listed on the government's National Career Service portal, and you can always call the recruitment agency on its official number before you travel.
