If you graduate in 2027, your placement season has effectively already begun. Many companies visit campuses between November and March, and the students who get offers early are rarely the ones with the highest marks. They are the ones who prepared in a structured way, applied widely and practised interviews before the big day. This month-by-month plan from GRPL India helps final-year students in engineering, management, commerce, science and arts colleges across India turn the 2026-27 season into a confirmed offer letter.
Understand How Campus Hiring Works in 2026-27
Most campus drives follow the same pattern: a pre-placement talk, an online aptitude and technical test, a group discussion or case round for some roles, followed by technical and HR interviews. Large IT services firms, banks, consulting companies, FMCG and manufacturing employers, retail chains and startups all hire freshers this way. Many also run pooled off-campus drives for smaller colleges, so even if your college has few visiting companies, you still have options.
Typical Fresher Salary Ranges
- IT services and support: INR 3 lakh to INR 4.5 lakh per annum for most mass-recruiter roles; higher for product and specialist roles.
- Sales, BFSI and retail management trainees: INR 2.4 lakh to INR 4 lakh per annum plus incentives.
- Manufacturing and core engineering trainees: INR 2.5 lakh to INR 4.5 lakh per annum.
- Operations, customer support and back office: INR 1.8 lakh to INR 3 lakh per annum.
Treat these as broad market ranges, not promises; every employer and city differs.
November to December: Build Your Foundation
Fix Your Resume
Keep it to one page. Lead with education, then projects, internships, skills and achievements. Use action verbs and numbers: "Built an attendance app used by 300 students" says more than "Worked on Android project". Make a separate version for each role type you are targeting.
Start Daily Aptitude Practice
Spend 45 minutes a day on quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and verbal ability. Most first-round eliminations happen here, so consistency matters more than intensity.
Clean Up Your Online Presence
Create or update your profile on LinkedIn Jobs with a clear photo, headline and project links. Register on the government National Career Service (NCS) portal and on fresher-friendly portals such as JobGetway and Indeed India.
January to February: Peak Drive Season
Prepare for Group Discussions
Practise with friends on current topics such as AI in jobs, India's manufacturing growth, or digital payments. Speak early, add facts, listen and summarise. Evaluators reward clarity and teamwork, not volume.
Master the Core Technical Topics
Engineering students should revise programming fundamentals, data structures, DBMS, operating systems and their core branch subjects. Commerce and management students should revise accounting basics, marketing concepts, Excel and current business news.
Rehearse HR Questions
Prepare honest, short answers to "Tell me about yourself", "Why should we hire you?", "Where do you see yourself in five years?" and "Are you willing to relocate?" Practise aloud, ideally on video, and watch yourself back.
March to April: Widen the Net
If you do not have an offer yet, do not panic. Many employers, especially mid-size companies, hire closer to graduation because they want joiners immediately.
- Off-campus drives: follow company career pages and pooled drives announced by universities.
- Internship-to-job routes: a final-semester internship often converts into a full-time offer. Look on the AICTE Internship Portal.
- Apprenticeships: graduate and diploma apprenticeships under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme portal give paid work experience with a stipend.
- Recruitment agencies: genuine placement consultancies connect freshers with employers who do not visit campuses. Never pay a fee for a job.
May to July: Close the Loop
Once you receive an offer, read the letter carefully: designation, CTC in INR, fixed versus variable pay, location, bond terms, joining date and documents required. Ask HR politely if anything is unclear. Keep your final mark sheets, ID proof, PAN and bank details ready, and stay in touch with the employer until your joining date.
Your Checklist for the Week Before a Drive
- Research the company: products, recent news, office locations and the role on offer.
- Print three copies of your resume and carry original and photocopied documents in a neat folder.
- Take two timed mock aptitude tests to warm up.
- Prepare two questions to ask the interviewer, such as training plans for freshers or what success looks like in the first six months.
- Plan formal clothes, sleep well and reach the venue at least 30 minutes early.
A Simple Self-Introduction Framework
Keep your introduction to about 60 seconds and follow three parts. Present: your name, course, college and one strength. Past: one project, internship or achievement with a measurable result. Future: why this role and company fit what you want to learn. For example: "I am a final-year B.Com student from Lucknow with strong Excel skills. During my internship at a distributor I reconciled 400 invoices a month with zero errors. I want to start my career in finance operations, and your graduate trainee programme offers exactly the structured learning I am looking for." Practise until it sounds natural, not memorised.
Common Mistakes Final-Year Students Make
- Waiting for the "perfect" company and skipping early drives.
- Copying resume templates with skills they cannot explain.
- Ignoring aptitude practice until the week before the test.
- Accepting one offer and then ghosting the employer for another; this damages your college's relationship with recruiters.
- Paying money to agents who promise guaranteed placement; genuine employers never ask candidates for fees.
Advice for Students From Smaller Colleges and Towns
You may have fewer companies visiting campus, but your preparation can be just as strong. Join online communities, take free skill courses on Skill India Digital, build two or three solid projects, and apply off-campus consistently. Many of our placed candidates from Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi and other Uttar Pradesh cities started exactly this way.
