Becoming a Medical Representative: Fresher Eligibility, Pay Structure and Pharma Interview Prep

Science graduate who enjoys meeting people? Here's how to become a medical representative – eligibility, daily work, pay and interview prep.

Becoming a Medical Representative: Fresher Eligibility, Pay Structure and Pharma Interview Prep

A medical representative (MR) role is one of the most popular routes into the pharma industry for science graduates who like meeting people. MRs share scientific information about their company's medicines with doctors, chemists and hospitals, earning a fixed salary plus target-linked incentives. Here's what the job involves and how to get selected, based on GRPL India's experience screening pharma sales candidates across Uttar Pradesh.

A day in the life

  • Doctor calls – meeting GPs and specialists to explain uses, dosage and benefits using approved material
  • Chemist and stockist visits – checking availability, booking orders, resolving supply issues
  • Hospital and clinic coverage – building relationships with doctors, nurses and pharmacy teams
  • Evening reporting – logging calls, orders and feedback in the company app
  • Monthly review with the area manager on targets, new doctors and next month's plan

Expect early starts to catch doctors before OPD hours and evening calls when clinics reopen.

Who is eligible?

Education

B.Sc (Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology), B.Pharm or D.Pharm graduates are preferred and find it easiest to get in. Some companies take B.Com or BA graduates with strong communication, especially for OTC or generic lines.

Practical requirements

  • Two-wheeler and valid driving licence
  • Smartphone for daily reporting
  • Willingness to be based at a headquarters town and travel nearby
  • Good spoken Hindi and enough English to explain product information

Skills pharma companies test

  • Science basics: revise human physiology, common conditions (diabetes, hypertension, infections) and the main drug classes used for them.
  • Crisp communication: doctors give you two minutes – make one or two clear points, listen and never argue.
  • Planning and discipline: daily call plans, an organised doctor list and regular follow-up.
  • Ethics: the Uniform Code for Pharmaceutical Marketing Practices (UCPMP) 2024 bars inducements and paid access to doctors. Mentioning this in your interview shows maturity.

How MR pay is structured

Typically three parts: fixed monthly salary, daily allowance plus travel reimbursement, and monthly or quarterly incentives for hitting targets. Amounts vary by company, product range, city and qualification, so compare the full package. Before accepting, ask:

  • What is the in-hand pay after PF and deductions?
  • How are targets set during the first months while I build my doctor list?
  • How is the daily allowance calculated – is fuel reimbursed?
  • Which towns are in my territory and how many outstation days a month?
  • Will these terms be in a written appointment letter (mandatory under the labour codes since 21 November 2025)?

MR openings in Lucknow and UP

Lucknow is a major healthcare hub with large hospitals, nursing homes and busy chemist markets such as Aminabad and Chowk. Pharma companies also post MRs in Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Ayodhya and Barabanki, often preferring locals who already know the routes. Skill certificates from the Life Sciences Sector Skill Development Council (LSSSDC) can strengthen your profile.

Interview questions to prepare

Expect an HR screen, a round with the area/regional manager and sometimes a role-play.

  1. Why become an MR? Link your science background, interest in healthcare and comfort with fieldwork.
  2. Introduce yourself. One minute – see our self-introduction formula.
  3. Explain how a common drug works. Pick something simple, like an antacid, and use plain words.
  4. "I already prescribe a competitor's brand." Listen, make one clear point and ask for a follow-up visit.
  5. How will you hit target in a new territory? List doctors and chemists, plan daily calls, review weekly.
  6. Detail this product to me. Greet, give two key benefits, answer a question, close politely.

Dress formally, carry printed resumes and certificates and arrive early – confidence and clarity often outweigh marks.

FAQs

Can non-science graduates become MRs?
Some companies hire commerce or arts graduates for OTC/generic lines, but science or pharmacy gives a clear edge.

Is a bike compulsory?
For most field MR roles, yes.

What's the career path?
MR → senior MR → area business manager → regional manager → zonal manager, with options in training, product management or key accounts.

How do I choose a placement agency?
It should share real company and territory details, never charge you and have an office you can visit.
