Loan sales is one of the busiest hiring areas in Indian banking and finance. Banks, NBFCs and DSAs constantly recruit for home loans, personal loans, business loans, loans against property and credit cards. If your interview is coming up, the questions below – drawn from interviews GRPL India arranges every week – will help you prepare. Many apply equally to credit card and branch sales roles.
The job in one paragraph
A loan sales executive finds borrowers, explains products, collects documents and tracks the file until disbursement: generating leads via calls, field visits, builder tie-ups, referrals and walk-ins; explaining rate, tenure, EMI, fees and eligibility; collecting KYC and income proofs; coordinating with credit and operations; and meeting monthly login and disbursement targets.
What the panel is checking
- Communication – can you explain a product simply in Hindi and English?
- Target comfort – are monthly numbers and incentives motivating for you?
- Product basics – EMI, credit score, KYC, eligibility.
- Integrity – will you sell responsibly, without false promises?
10 core questions and model answers
1. Introduce yourself.
Under a minute: education, customer-facing experience and why this role. "I'm a B.Com graduate. I worked part-time at a mobile store during college, where I enjoyed advising customers and hitting daily targets. Financial sales appeals to me because it combines customer interaction with clear, incentive-led growth."
2. Why loan sales?
Show you know it's target-driven and that this motivates you – plus learning finance, earning potential and helping customers buy a home or grow a business.
3. What is an EMI and what changes it?
The fixed monthly instalment until the loan is repaid. It depends on loan amount, interest rate and tenure; a longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises total interest.
4. What is a CIBIL score?
A three-digit credit score (300–900) reflecting repayment history. Lenders use it to judge risk; above 700 is generally considered good and improves approval chances and terms.
5. Documents for a personal loan?
KYC (PAN plus Aadhaar or another officially valid document such as passport, driving licence or voter ID), recent salary slips and bank statements; for self-employed applicants, ITRs and business proof. Add that exact needs vary by lender.
6. Secured vs unsecured loans?
Secured loans are backed by collateral (home loan, LAP); unsecured ones (personal loan, credit card) aren't, so lenders lean more on income and credit score.
7. How will you generate leads?
Warm calling, visiting builders, dealers and CAs, asking satisfied customers for referrals, tapping your network and following up consistently.
8. "Your rate is too high."
Don't argue. Acknowledge, find out what they're comparing, then explain the full picture – fees, tenure flexibility, turnaround, service. If the product isn't right, say so honestly and keep the relationship.
9. "Sell me this loan."
Ask first: purpose, monthly income, existing EMIs. Then match the product. Listening scores higher than a memorised pitch.
10. How do you handle target pressure?
Break the monthly target into daily calls, meetings and logins, track your numbers and learn from rejected files.
For experienced candidates
- What is FOIR and how does it affect eligibility?
- What is LTV in a home loan?
- How do you manage your DSA/connector network?
- What were your average monthly disbursement and conversion rate?
- Describe a rejected file and what you learned.
Use real examples and be ready to back your numbers with incentive slips or appraisal letters. Home loan roles often probe LTV, property papers and builder tie-ups.
Questions to ask them
- How are targets and incentives calculated?
- Is the role on company payroll or a third-party payroll?
- What product and systems training will I get?
- Which areas or customer segments will I cover?
Avoid these mistakes
- Promising "guaranteed approval" – lenders follow RBI fair-practice norms and mis-selling ends careers.
- Reciting answers you don't understand.
- Hiding job changes or gaps – explain them briefly and honestly.
- Arriving without a resume copy or knowledge of the company's products.
