Almost every business in India – a trading house, a factory, a hospital, a builder or a service firm – needs someone who keeps the books straight. That makes accounts executive roles one of the most dependable entry points for commerce graduates. If you hold a B.Com, M.Com, BBA or a commerce diploma, this guide walks you through the job, the skills that get tested, and how to stand out. It draws on what our recruiters at GRPL India see every week while shortlisting accounts candidates.
A typical day in an accounts role
Job titles vary – accounts assistant, junior accountant, billing executive or accounts executive – but in most small and mid-sized companies the work includes:
- Recording transactions: sales, purchase, receipt, payment and journal vouchers in the accounting software.
- Bank reconciliation: matching the bank statement to the books and tracing missing or duplicate entries.
- GST checks: verifying GSTIN and tax rates on invoices and preparing data for periodic returns.
- TDS: deducting tax on rent, contractor and professional payments and tracking deposit dates.
- Receivables and payables: chasing customer payments and keeping vendor ledgers clean.
- Cash and expenses: checking bills, maintaining the petty cash book and processing claims.
- Audit and payroll support: preparing schedules for the CA and sharing salary data with HR.
Large companies split these tasks across a team. In a small firm you may handle all of them – a tougher start, but a faster way to learn the full cycle.
The skills recruiters check first
1. Core accounting concepts
Expect questions on the golden rules, capital vs revenue expenditure, what a trial balance tells you and how depreciation is charged. Revise these before any interview.
2. Tally and accounting software
Tally is still the default in Indian SMEs and many employers run a short practical test. Be ready to create ledgers, post entries, raise a GST invoice and pull a ledger or balance sheet report. ERPs work on the same logic.
3. GST and TDS basics
At entry level you are not expected to be a tax expert, but you should explain CGST, SGST and IGST, input tax credit and why invoice details must match. For TDS, know why it is deducted and that deposits and returns have fixed due dates – the Income Tax e-filing portal publishes the current calendar.
4. MS Excel
VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, SUMIF and clean formatting come up often. Some interviewers ask you to reconcile two short lists in Excel on the spot.
5. Accuracy and discretion
You will see salaries, bank details and margins. Employers want people who re-check their work, file records neatly and keep numbers confidential.
Qualifications and growth path
B.Com is the most common entry qualification. M.Com, MBA (Finance) and CA/CMA Inter candidates often start a level higher; ICAI publishes the details of the CA route if you are considering it. A typical ladder runs: accounts assistant → accounts executive → senior accountant → accounts manager → finance manager. Learning GST returns, TDS statements and month-end closing early speeds up that climb.
Where accounts jobs are in Lucknow and Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow consistently hires accounts staff in trading and distribution firms, real estate and construction, hospitals, schools and CA practices – especially around Aminabad, Hazratganj, Gomti Nagar, Alambagh and Transport Nagar. Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Noida are active too, and many employers prefer local candidates who can join quickly.

Resume tips for accounts roles
- Show software skills near the top: Tally, Excel, any ERP and your typing speed.
- Describe real tasks – "reconciled three bank accounts monthly" beats "handled banking".
- Include internships or articleship, even short ones at a CA firm.
- Freshers should stick to one page – see our resume guides on the GRPL India blog.
- Mirror the job title used in the advert ("accounts executive", "junior accountant") so recruiters find you.
Interview questions to rehearse
- Debit note vs credit note? Explain when each is issued, using a sales-return example.
- How do you reconcile a bank account? Match entries, then list cheques issued but not presented and deposits not yet credited.
- What is input tax credit? GST paid on purchases that can be set off against GST payable on sales, subject to the rules.
- Why is TDS deducted? The payer deducts tax at source on specified payments and deposits it with the government.
- Trial balance doesn't tally – what now? Check totals, postings and opening balances step by step.
Practise a few Tally entries and Excel formulas beforehand – a quick test is common.
Before you accept an offer
Salary depends on city, company size, qualification and how much compliance you handle. Instead of comparing advert figures, confirm your in-hand pay after PF and ESI, working hours, Saturday policy and month-end overtime. Under the labour codes effective from 21 November 2025, appointment letters are mandatory for all workers – ask for yours before joining.
FAQs
Can a fresher get an accounts executive job?
Yes. Many firms hire B.Com freshers as trainees or assistants. A Tally certificate, solid Excel and a short internship make a real difference.
Is Tally alone enough?
No. Employers also test accounting fundamentals, GST awareness and Excel. Learn the logic behind the entries, not just the software.
Do entry-level roles require GST return filing?
Not usually – freshers prepare data and check invoices while seniors file. Learning the return cycle early still helps you grow.
How do I choose a genuine job consultancy?
Look for a real office, clear job details and no registration fee for candidates. GRPL India never charges candidates to register.
