E-commerce, quick commerce and organised retail have turned warehouses into some of India's busiest workplaces. Every order is received, stored, picked, packed and dispatched by people – which is why warehouse jobs are widely open to freshers, including Class 10 and 12 pass candidates. Here's what each role involves, what a shift looks like and how to grow into a supervisor.
How a warehouse works
- Inbound – unloading trucks, counting and checking for damage
- Storage – putting items in the correct rack and recording the location
- Picking – collecting items for each order with a pick list or scanner
- Packing – packing securely and labelling parcels
- Dispatch – sorting by route and loading vehicles
- Inventory control – counting stock and fixing system mismatches
Fresher roles explained
Picker
Walks the aisles collecting products, often guided by a handheld scanner. Both speed and accuracy are tracked.
Packer
Verifies the item, picks the right box or pouch, packs it securely and applies the shipping label. A wrong item means a return, so attention to detail is key.
Loader / unloader
Moves goods between trucks and the floor. Physical work suited to fit candidates trained in safe lifting.
Inventory associate
Runs cycle counts, updates the warehouse management system and investigates missing or extra stock. Class 12 or graduates with computer basics are preferred – a good stepping stone to supervisory work.
Data entry / MIS assistant
Updates dispatch records, prepares daily Excel reports and maintains invoices and delivery challans. See our data entry skills guide.

A typical shift
Attendance and a briefing on volumes and safety, then zone or task assignments. Breaks are scheduled and many sites have a canteen. The last hour is usually the busiest as teams clear dispatches before vehicles leave. Festive sales bring overtime – ask how it's paid.
Safety basics
- Wear safety shoes and reflective jackets
- Lift with your legs, not your back; get help for heavy items
- Keep clear of forklift lanes and follow floor markings
- Never climb racks
- Report spills, broken pallets and damaged goods immediately
Good employers give safety training on day one – ask if they don't.
Documents to carry
- Aadhaar and PAN
- Class 10/12 marksheet
- Bank details or cancelled cheque
- Passport-size photos
- Address proof if different from Aadhaar
- Police verification if requested
Pay questions to ask
Pay varies by city, company, role and shift – ignore random social media figures and ask the recruiter about in-hand salary, PF and ESIC, overtime and night allowance, attendance/productivity incentives and transport or meals.
