The right sales hire can lift a whole quarter; the wrong one costs months of lost pipeline. As businesses add field sales, telesales and channel staff for year-end targets, early exits remain the biggest headache – usually because people were hired on confidence alone and quit when targets felt unclear. This playbook reflects how GRPL India hires sales executives for employers across Uttar Pradesh and the rest of India.
1. Pin down exactly what "sales" means for you
Before posting, write down:
- Selling model – field, inside/telesales, channel/distributor or in-store
- Buyer – consumers, retailers, businesses, builders, doctors or institutions
- Territory – city or district, travel load, whether a two-wheeler is required
- What a good month looks like – visits, new accounts, orders or revenue
- Tools – CRM, order app, catalogue, lead lists
A sharp definition attracts people who've done the same job before.
2. Make pay and incentives easy to understand
Strong salespeople read the incentive plan before the salary. Keep it to:
- A realistic fixed salary for the city and experience level
- Incentives tied to two or three measurable outcomes, paid on a fixed date
- Written travel, mobile and daily field allowances
- A one-to-three-month ramp-up with softer targets for new joiners
Under the labour codes in force since 21 November 2025, appointment letters are mandatory and wages must be paid on time – so put salary, incentive terms and allowances in writing.
3. Source from several channels
- Job portals – post with city, pay range and requirements so the right people self-select.
- National Career Service (NCS) – the Ministry of Labour and Employment's free portal for employers.
- Referrals – good salespeople know other good salespeople in the same market.
- A recruitment partner – useful when you need several pre-screened hires quickly.
4. Phone-screen within 24 hours
Good sales candidates field many calls, so speed wins. Use the same short script every time:
- Current product, customer type and territory
- Target vs achievement for the last three months
- Expected salary, notice period, willingness to travel
- Two-wheeler and licence, for field roles
The call is itself a test – do they listen, answer clearly and ask sensible questions?
5. Ask structured interview questions
Ask everyone the same core questions and score them on a simple scale:
- "Walk me through a deal you closed recently – how did you find the customer?"
- "Tell me about a month you missed target. What did you change?"
- "How do you plan a day in the field?"
- "The customer says your price is too high. What do you say?"
- "Which numbers do you track weekly, and why?"
Push for specifics – products, numbers, steps. Vague answers are a red flag.
6. Add a ten-minute role-play
Give a simple product and a customer profile, then play a busy, sceptical buyer (by phone for telesales roles). Look for:
- Questions about the buyer's need rather than a memorised pitch
- Calm handling of one objection
- Asking for the order or a clear next step
7. Verify before you offer
Speak to at least one former manager about targets, attendance and integrity. Check ID, address and education documents, and run background checks for roles handling cash or customer data.
8. Protect the first 90 days
Most sales exits happen in the first three months. Reduce them with:
- Product training and a joint field visit with a senior in week one
- A first-month activity target, not just a revenue number
- Weekly check-ins during month one
- The first incentive paid on time, exactly as promised
Scaling up? The PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana offers EPFO-registered employers up to ₹3,000 per month for each eligible additional employee retained at least six months (for jobs created 1 August 2025 – 31 July 2027). Confirm eligibility with your PF consultant.
FAQs
How long should a sales hire take?
With a clear role, a fast phone screen and one interview day including the role-play, one to two weeks is realistic. Delays usually come from slow feedback.
Freshers or experienced?
Freshers suit simple products with strong training; experienced hires suit complex or B2B selling where you need quick results. Many teams mix both.
What is a fair incentive plan?
Easy to calculate, linked to results the person controls and paid on a fixed date. Too many conditions breed distrust and exits.
How do I choose a recruitment partner?
Pick one that understands your product and territory, shares screening notes, never charges candidates and has an office you can visit.
