Germany and several other European countries face long-term shortages of electricians, mechatronics technicians, nurses, welders, drivers and IT specialists. India, with a young, trainable and English-capable workforce, has become a priority source country, supported by migration and mobility arrangements between India and European governments. For European employers, the question is no longer whether to hire from India but how to do it legally, ethically and with low drop-out. This GRPL India guide explains the steps.
Roles in Highest Demand
- Industrial electricians and mechatronics technicians
- Welders, CNC machinists and fitters
- Registered nurses and elderly-care assistants
- Heavy vehicle and bus drivers
- Software developers and data engineers
- Hospitality cooks and service staff
Step 1: Check Recognition of Qualifications
Many regulated professions, including nursing and some electrical trades, require formal recognition of Indian qualifications before work can begin at full level. Start the recognition process early, using official guidance on Make it in Germany. Shortlist candidates whose diplomas, ITI certificates and work records are complete and verifiable.
Step 2: Build Language Into the Plan
Language is the biggest cause of delay. Most vocational roles need at least a B1 level of German for visa and workplace integration. Budget six to nine months of structured training in India, and consider funding it in return for a service commitment. Candidates who see a firm job offer stay motivated through language classes.
Step 3: Recruit Ethically and Transparently
Follow the ILO Fair Recruitment Initiative and the employer-pays principle: workers should not pay recruitment fees. Use licensed recruiting agents and register where Indian rules require it through the eMigrate portal under the Ministry of External Affairs. Government-linked channels such as NSDC also support international placements. Give candidates written job terms, salary, housing and travel details in a language they understand.
Step 4: Assess Skills in India
Run practical trade tests in India with your own technical assessor or a video-linked panel. Check safety awareness, reading of technical drawings and problem-solving, not only theory. Shortlisted workers can then join a pre-departure programme covering workplace culture, housing and rights at work.
Step 5: Plan Arrival and Retention
Assign a mentor at the workplace, help with registration, bank accounts and housing, and continue language classes after arrival. Retention in the first year depends heavily on how welcome the worker feels.
Budgeting for International Hiring
Plan the full cost per worker before you start: sourcing and assessment, language training, recognition and translation fees, visa and travel, initial housing and onboarding support. Employers who budget these items upfront, and share the plan openly with candidates, see far fewer drop-outs between offer and arrival. Building small cohorts of eight to fifteen workers per intake also makes training, travel and mentoring much easier to manage than one-off hires.
